Getting Prepared for Baby
Bryan Batelli has some advice for those who just found out they are expecting a new member in their family.
You Just Found Out Your Pregnant, Now What?
By Bryan Batelli
So you're having a baby, congratulations! But you're probably thinking,
Now What? That is a common reaction especially to something that is so
unknown. Oh yeah, people have told you what it's like to have a baby, but
until you experience it yourself, you don't know anything for sure.
Being pregnant and expecting a baby is a fun time and nothing is as
exciting as picking out the baby furniture and clothing. You know that the
items you choose will be etched in you and your baby's mind forever and
more importantly shape your baby's childhood.
So how do you choose what baby products are right for the little one?
That's a question that is different for each parent based on taste and
preference but the one thing you should always have in mind is the safety
of the product. There are many places to find out about how safe a product
may be. One place that I recommend is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (www.cpsc.gov). This a government sponsored website that lists
product recalls or safety issues on all types of products, including baby.
There are countless other companies, publications and websites that review
products, like Consumer Reports but I personally think that the best site
is the CPSC.
You maybe still thinking about how to even start finding baby products.
One way is the Internet. The Internet makes it possible to review baby
products in the comfort of your own home without a salesman or a crowded
store to dissuade you. Check out all the different manufacturers websites
and get an idea of each company's style. Then when you have a sense of
what you like, go to the store nearest you and check it out. There are
many reasons to see products first hand, for an example, each stroller has
a different "one-hand" closing mechanism to make it easy for you to hold
the baby in one hand and close the stroller with the other. You won't get
the idea of how something works on the net unless you see it for yourself.
When it comes time to pick out the furniture for the baby's room, keep
safety in mind but also think of this, it needs to be practical. Some of
the furniture out there was made to look good but it doesn't mean that it
will be easy to use with a crying baby in hand. Also you might look for
cribs and changing tables that can be used as your child gets older. A lot
of the cribs today can be converted into toddler beds. This way when your
child gets too big for the crib you can easily convert it without having
to go buy another bed. It's a great way to save money and time.
All in all, the one thing to look for when it comes to baby products is
safety. Then practicality and finally the look. That is not to say that
you have to sacrifice the way your baby's room might look, you just have
to find baby products that have all three. Just continue to do your
research and most of all have fun. You'll never experience the same
feeling again like you do with your first baby.
